In April 2016,a draft bill was put forward in the US Senate containing provisions that would require tech companies to decrypt customers' data at the request of a court. Shortly after, a petition was initiated with the aim to gather support from consumers and enterprises against this bill. The petition, which has a goal of 100 000 signatures, has already reached 70% of its target. Initiators of the petition underline, among other, that the proposed bill 'undermines Americans' privacy by increasing the risk that their private information and information entrusted to businesses is accessed by criminals, hackers and government entities, both domestically and abroad'.
