The US Intelligence Community, a federation of 16 agencies of the US government including the CIA and the NSA, officially blamed the Russian government for recent cyber-attacks, including the DNC hack. The Department of Homeland Security said in a joint statement with Director of National Intelligence James Clapper that USIC "is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations". In addition, the USIC stated that the Russia-driven thefts and disclosures of hacked emails, including on DCLeaks, WikiLeaks and Guccifer2.0 portals, "are intended to interfere with the US election process". While Clinton has previously suspected, during her campaign, that Russia might be behind the attacks, this is the first official attribution by the official US apparatus to Russia for cyber-attacks, and the only formal one after the attribution of an attacks on Sony to North Korea.
