US highway agency approves Nuro autonomous car

Feb, 06, 2023 Hi-network.com

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a temporary approval for robotics company Nuro to use autonomous cars that do not meet federal standards for human-driven cars. The approved car does not have side and rear-view mirrors, windshield wipers, a steering wheel, or brake pedals, among other missing safety elements required for classical cars. The vehicles can be controlled remotely by a human operator if needed. The temporary approval requires Nuro to submit safety reports to NHTSA, hold regular meetings with the administration, and reach out to the community in areas where the vehicle is used. The company is allowed to use as many as 2500 vehicles on public roads, but it only plans to deploy up to 100 in 2020.
