UPDATE: Ofcom UK takes a hard stance on wireless broadband kit

Apr, 26, 2023 Hi-network.com

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband Internet Service Providers (ISP) in the UK have expressed concern after Ofcom, the UK's telecoms regulator, appeared to be tightening their rules on the compliance of related hardware. The issue stems from a speech by Ken Johnson, Ofcom's Enforcement Manager, highlighting some planned actions under Wireless Telegraphy regulations. Specifically, Ofcom has emphasised the importance of the DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) requirements and any equipment which lets users tell it which country it is in at the time, which may not be legal in the UK.

Ofcom's stance could effectively ban some providers' equipment, reduce choice in the market, and raise costs. However, Ofcom has denied that they are making wireless broadband kit illegal and instead emphasised the importance of ensuring that the equipment is safe and compliant. Ofcom's move to take a hard stance may reflect some manufacturers' unwillingness to engage with the regulator on these issues. Meanwhile, UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA) is pressing manufacturers to improve their commitment to DFS compliance.
