The Irish DPC publishes three data protection guides for children

Nov, 10, 2023 Hi-network.com

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) issued three brief guides for children aged 13 and over to educate them on their personal data rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The first guide, 'Data protection- What's it all about?', introduces children to the concept of data protection and personal data, as well as its relevance.

The second part, 'My data protection rights,' offers insight into different personal data rights and how to use them. These include practical ways to delete online data and know how it is being used, (not) giving consent to various organisations regarding data processing while also getting a copy of their data. Moreover, children are informed about how they can file a complaint to the DPC through their website, post, or helpline.

Finally, 'Top tips for keeping your data safe online' includes 15 recommendations that might be helpful to children and adults alike. These include, among others, setting their social media accounts in private mode, being cautious when sharing their location, keeping their parents informed, and avoiding using the same password for everything, as there are higher chances for their data to be stolen.
