Survey reveals child abuse online on the rise in South Africa

A survey conducted by Digimune, a digital identity, privacy and social media protection company, reveals that  online child abuse in the form of cyberbullying, cyber stalking and online shaming is on the rise in South Africa.  

The survey which was conducted over 200 parents to understand their concerns and  concerns around children and digital threats reveals:

  • 51.5% children of parents who participated in the survey were cyberbullied 
  • 54% of children have accessed inappropriate content via digital platforms
  • 35% of children have been  a victim of cyberstalking
  • 36.5% of children have been victim to online shaming
  • 43.5% of children willingly  share their personal  information on online platforms
