Security: Vital for Technology-enabled Education

Oct, 11, 2013 Hi-network.com

More and more we are seeing the education landscape change to include more technology for collaboration and mobile learning. Colleges and universities are enabling secure networks for staff and students to access resources on-campus and off. With October being National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) and Educause next week, we are hearing a lot of talk about the importance of campus network security and threats.

In his latest blog, Peter Romness, Business Development Manager at Cisco, discusses network threats that can arise from custom-written malware, external plugged-in drives and the ever-present possibility of tricked or malicious insiders. He explains that monitoring inside the network is mandatory to combat new and existing threats.

As schools and universities look toward flipped classrooms , mobile learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), it is up to IT leaders and decision makers to ensure the network infrastructure is capable of managing and deterring threats. NCSAM is a great time to drive awareness and action, too. The Educause team has numerous resources available within their cybersecurity initiative site, and we recently created a new survival guide to provide colleges and universities with resources to help develop a secure BYOD/mobile learning strategy. Check it out, and if you are attending Educause in Anaheim, be sure to visit us in booth#601.
