Rwanda was selected by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) to kick off the Giga initiative which aims to provide Internet connectivity to schools across the world. The country was chosen for its information and communications technology (ICT) policy that helped improve access to the Internet and digital services. Regarding its ICT infrastructure, Rwanda has further succeeded in deploying 7000 km of optical fiber, by which it extended 4G Internet coverage to 96% of the populace. The Giga initiative is also in line with Rwanda's vision of becoming a knowledge-based economy.
