The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) AI Council released a report with recommendations on why and how G7 could advance the global governance of artificial intelligence (AI) at its 2023 G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

The report emphasises the need to create globally interoperable regulatory frameworks that can effectively address AI challenges and accelerate responsible AI adoption, and argues that the G7 Summit in 2023 provides an opportunity to advance cooperative AI governance and harness the potential of AI. It then makes policy recommendations on how G7 countries can set the global agenda for AI governance, including: (a) alignment on consistent norms, concepts, and terminology for AI regulatory frameworks; (b) cooperative development and adoption of technical AI standards; (c) adoption of principles for good and ethical AI governance that promote an interoperable, balanced, and mutually recognised approach to AI regulation. The report finds that prudent and globally interoperable regulatory frameworks that are risk-based, context-specific, agile, and collaborative can effectively address AI's challenges, accelerate responsible AI adoption, and harness the full potential of AI.

The CSIS AI Council is a cross-disciplinary working group of CEOs, academic experts, and former policymakers, and is co-chaired by Julie Sweet, CEO of Accenture, and Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft.
