In his State of the Union address, President Biden highlighted the impact of the Chips and Science Act on the United States, emphasizing increased investment in research and development. The President acknowledged the challenges faced during the pandemic, particularly the semiconductor chip shortage that led to rising prices across various industries, from cell phones to automobiles.
Biden expressed pride in the initiative to reduce reliance on imported semiconductor chips, a technology pioneered in America. Private companies are now channelling billions of dollars into the establishment of new chip factories within the country. This move is expected to generate tens of thousands of jobs, many of which offer competitive salaries exceeding$100,000 per year, without the necessity of a college degree.
On the domestic front, specific digital policy priorities include strengthening and enacting bipartisan privacy legislation to safeguard children online, and harnessing the potential of AI while addressing associated risks. The President also advocated for measures such as banning AI voice impersonation.
