New projects to tackle online hate launched by Samsung and Internet Matters

Jun, 12, 2023 Hi-network.com

Samsung and Internet Matters have teamed up to help children and parents tackle online hate, as research shows that more and more youngsters are becoming racist, homophobic and sexist online. A new module has been developed to educate and give practical advice to families on the issues surrounding online hate as part of the joint initiative, 'The Online Together Project'.

Twelve percent of parents reported that their children had experienced hate speech online, the highest level in two years, according to a survey of 1,600 UK parents and 1,000 children aged 9-16, conducted in November 2022. However, parents underreport their children's exposure to online hate.

Launched last year with a module on breaking gender stereotypes, online hate is the second topic the Online Together project covers. The interactive tool consists of 10 questions and encourages conversations between parents and children. Each question provides different conversation prompts, critical information on the topic and advice for parents and carers. There are downloadable guides with more details at the end of the questions.
