To aid countries manage disaster response activities more efficiently in a time when the frequency, intensity and human and economic impact of disasters has been increasing across the globe, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) provides new guidelines for developing National Emergency Telecommunication Plans. The guidelines are expected to aid authorities and policymakers in developing policies that guarantee the use of key telecommunication networks and related services in the lead up to,during and post disaster events. The national emergency plans are to ensure availability of communication infrastructure and support timely distribution of information within the government and humanitarian agencies as well as affected communities during the crisis. These plans also aid authorities in identifying risk areas during specific disasters and highlight where funding is required.
