Information literacy programme in Finland teaches children to spot disinformation from elementary school

When the latest Media Literacy Index report came out in 2019, Finland appeared at the number 1 spot among 35 other countries in Europe. This might be related with the educational approach that the country adopted to train citizens from a very young age to be able to distinguish different types of harmful information. The curriculum in public secondary schools in Finland has also incorporated a strong component of information literacy across all subjects. Developing critical thinking is within the core of the programme, that has been piloted by a high-level committee of 30 members, representing bodies from government to non-governmental organisations and the police, intelligence and security services.
