Industry group launches specification for content provenance

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) -an industry alliance including companies such as Adobe, Intel, Microsoft, and Twitter -has released version 1.0 of its technical specification for digital provenance. The specification is intended to enable content creators and editors to create tamper-evident media, by selectively disclosing information about who created or changed digital content and how it was altered. It can be used by digital platforms to define what information is associated with each type of content (e.g. images, videos, audio files, or documents), how the information is presented and stored, and how evidence of tampering can be identified. Developed and made available as an open standard, the specification is seen as an important step in addressing the challenges of deceptive digital content such as deepfakes.
