The German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) is reported to have joined SNOMED International in order to roll out nationwide use of Systemised Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT), a standardised language for accurately coding healthcare. With over 350 000 concepts, the terminology ranges from diagnosis, surgical and therapeutic procedures, symptoms, observables, and pharmaceutical products. The SNOMED CT allows users to record and exchange patient data more accurately, locally and internationally, improving the quality and effectiveness of patient care. SCOMED International currently works with 40 member countries, including 22 in Europe. Germany will enhance the interoperability of its healthcare by aligning its clinical language with the international standard.
