According to a news report, the government of Eswatini shut down the internet for two hours on Friday 15 October 2021 as pro-democracy protests heightened. Social media services were affected and remained inaccessible during the outage period. Three months after the government forces quelled earlier protests, the African nation which happens to be the last absolute monarchy on the continent has been faced with a new wave of unrest. This is not the first time the government has employed the shutdown of the internet as a means to suppress the true expression of the citizenry, who want to see a new Eswatini. Internet outages were recorded during the June and July protests in the country.
