Court to decide whether ISPs to be held liable for copyright infringements by users

Nov, 01, 2023 Hi-network.com

Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Bros.Records Inc., Universal Music Corp. and other music publishers are suing Charter Communications Inc. for alleged direct and vicarious copyright infringement for failing to control piracy over its internet service.

Allegations are that Charter did not assert control over copyright infringements of its users, profited from the infringement, and could have controlled it. Many, including law professors from Harvard and Stanford, voiced concerns to the court that such ruling would impose unprecedented risks of liability and make it nearly impossible for any ISP to win dismissal of bare, conclusory, and speculative allegations.
