Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter company, announced in a series of tweets that Twitter will invest in a small team of developers and designers to start working on establishing the open source, decentralised standard for running the social media websites. He added that: 'the goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard'. In a reasoning for this decision, Dorsey claims that 'social media is moving forward from content hosting toward recommendation algorithms which are proprietary, and one can't choose to build alternative.
Dorsey added that: 'new technologies have emerged to make a decentralized approach more viable' referring to the blockchain technology as one example.
Creation of web standards is a time consuming process. New standards emerge after the wide adoption of the online community, and extensive work on implementation. Mozzila and W3C foundation, also announced earlier that they are working on their version of decentralised standards, and the ActivityPub standard for decentralised social media from W3C foundation is already implemented on many services world wide.
