Uber was fined US$59 million for failing to provide the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) with information on sexual assault and harassment claims. The CPUC has regulatory authority over transportation companies. The commission had asked Uber questions about specific details on several incidents of sexual assault. The ride-hailing company refused to respond, claiming that the disclosure of such details would present a privacy risk for assault survivors and drivers. Uber's license can be suspended if it does not pay the penalty within 30 days.
