A thorough data protection law is long overdue in Nigeria

Apr, 12, 2023 Hi-network.com

Data is an essential tool in today's digital age, and Nigeria is without a doubt a country that lacks defined rules in this sphere. Numerous international financial institutions, development partners, and even potential investors have asked why Nigeria does not have a data protection law in place. The implementation of such a law would bring the nation into line with a large number of nations throughout the world and make Nigeria a global player.

The federal government created the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) in 2022 to solve this problem and make sure that people's private information is kept secure and private when utilized for 'digital things.' The Nigeria Data Protection Bill was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in January this year and was presented by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, and referred to the National Assembly for consideration. The data protection measure must be approved by the present National Assembly in order for President Buhari to sign it by May 29.
