Uswitch publishes estimates on mobile emissions revealing countries that generate the most e-waste

Jan, 13, 2023 Hi-network.com

CONTENT: Uswitch, a UK-based price comparison and switching service, has published a mobile study exploring how much e-waste telecom and IT devices generate in the UK and how it compares to other countries.

Using WEEE data from the UK Environment Agency, it notes that between 2008 and 2022, e-waste derived from IT and telecoms almost doubled, which indicates a growth trend that could reach 55,000 tonnes by 2030.

After Norway, the UK is the world's second largest generator per capita. The prognosis is unfavourable for the UK, as recent research suggests it will outperform Norway by 2024.

Every discarded device produces a carbon footprint that contributes to climate change and adversely impacts nature. It is estimated that just one smartphone has a lifetime production of 93kg of CO2.

For this reason, it is important to adopt measures to reduce e-waste. The study draws attention to some of them: (i) consider opting for a SIM only deal; (ii) look after your phone; (iii) recycle; and (iv) carefully dispose of handsets.
