US Senators introduce digital privacy bill to strengthen FTC's enforcement power

According to CNBC, Democratic senators recently introduced a new online privacy bill that could mark a milestone in the current push towards the establishment of a federal privacy law in the United-States. Washington Senator Maria Cantwell, the top Democrat on the US Senate Commerce Committee, is leading the charge for this new bill. According to the Guardian, the Consumer Online Privacy Rights Act (Copra) comes after a series of failed attempts to regulate the business model and practices of the main US tech companies. If passed, the act would strengthen the Federal Trade Commission's enforcement power, granting the regulator more leeway to levy large fines on tech companies and making easier for individuals to bring legal action against companies.
