US government seeks partnership to develop secure and standardised digital ID

Aug, 31, 2023 Hi-network.com

The US government is inviting companies with expertise in digital identities on mobile devices to express their interest in working on related reference architectures. The aim is to develop secure and standardized digital ID architectures that are privacy-focused, secure, equitable, and easy to adopt and use. The project is being managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), specifically its National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.

NIST recognizes the need for technical standardization in the digital ID market to ensure reliable verification of someone's identity digitally. Therefore, the project aims to establish standardized technical requirements that will address these challenges. Organizations have until 28th September to submit their letters of interest, and demonstrate their ability to support ISO/IEC 18013-5 and 18013-7 standards.

The overall goal of this U.S. government initiative is to establish a standardized digital ID market that effectively addresses privacy concerns, cybersecurity challenges, and the need for reliable identity verification. The government's efforts align with previous global initiatives, such as those in the EU.
