In Suva, Fiji, administrator Samantha Power unveiled new investments as part of the US commitment to strengthen ties with Pacific Island nations. The focus is on aiding these nations in tackling climate challenges, economic shocks, and health issues.

Power announced an upcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of the South Pacific as part of the package. This partnership will drive USAID's Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP)-Pacific initiative to boost secure and resilient digital progress across the region. The effort targets improved broadband access, enhanced public service digital delivery, promoted policies and regulations to enable the region's digital transformation and upgraded digital skills, including cybersecurity capacity.

In addition, USAID will assist Fiji in its democratic growth by contributing$600,000 for electoral reforms, inclusive political participation, and countering misinformation. The goal is to strengthen democracy and promote the active involvement of marginalized groups in political processes. Investments will also be allocated to increase peace corps funding, forge new health partnerships with FAO and WHO, and explore blue carbon solutions through research and analysis.

Why does it matter?

This commitment speaks to the growing recognition of the region's strategic importance in terms of geopolitical dynamics and in the face of pressing challenges such as climate change, economic vulnerabilities, and public health concerns. The focus on digital connectivity and cybersecurity will increase the ability of Pacific Island nations to develop and maintain robust digital networks for their participation in the global economy and the delivery of essential public services.
