In partnership with the Chilean Ministry of Education, UNESCO's new 'Strengthening the digital competencies of teachers' pilot initiative was announced Thursday, 4 May. Embracing the potential of sustainable digital alternatives in education, this initiative will also work with Huawei, with over 30 years of expertise in artificial intelligence, 5G and internet of things, to provide teachers with the necessary tools for enhancing their digital skills.

Profiting over 1000 teachers across Chile, the trial calls for creating a personalised online learning instrument. Equipped with diagnostic tools to evaluate teachers' competencies, it will also suggest targeted courses to fill in gaps in knowledge, featuring a collection of training modules and activities. If successful, this project will be extended to wider Latin America and the Caribbean, a region emphasising gender-inclusive digital capacity development.

This launch comes one day after Gabriel Boric announced a National Tutoring Plan, once again stressing his focus on bettering the Chilean educational system -for teachers and students alike.

Accompanying these announcements, UNESCO is organising a webinar to further outline the educational opportunities within the internet and services like openAI's chatbot, ChatGPT (report in Spanish here).
