Turkey imposes 10 million lira fine on social media platforms

Nov, 04, 2023 Hi-network.com

Turkey imposed fines on social platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, because they did not appoint official representatives in the country as required by the country's digital media law that entered into force in July 2020. These representatives have to remove any content that the Turkish authorities consider illegal within 48 hours. The digital media law gives the companies 30 more days to appoint their official representatives, otherwise the fine will increase up to 30 million liras. Further sanctions include an advertisement ban for 3 months and reducing the social media platforms' bandwidth by 90%.
