The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notified 19 Internet-based phone companies against assisting or facilitating robocalls. Voice-over-IP (VoIP) service providers play a significant role in the robocall system by allowing fraudsters and abusive telemarketers to call consumers at a very low price. Robocalls are illegal when made without consent or when they enable fraud. The FTC has the authority to punish companies that violate rules designed to protect consumers from unwanted telemarketing scams and calls. Authorities have avoided holding phone companies accountable for calls their customers make, but it has changed their stance regarding the assistance of robocalls in fraud cases.
