Ministry of Interior of Georgia fined for violating personal data processing

The Personal Data Protection Service has fined the Ministry of Interior of Georgia 500 GEL for breaching personal data processing regulations. The Georgian Young Lawyers' Association (GYLA) reported this incident. The violation occurred while handling the cases of 43 individuals who were arrested during a protest in Tbilisi.

Each person's case file contained a "notification" that included personal details, including name, surname, year of birth, and the legal reasons for their detention. Consequently, the files of each individual contained information about other arrested individuals.

The Personal Data Protection Service declared this a violation of the Law of Georgia, "On Personal Data Protection," stating that including information about other detainees in the ongoing proceedings against a specific person was unnecessary. The GYLA emphasized that despite previous rulings against the Ministry's improper data processing, there has been a lack of effective action to address these systemic violations.
