Jamaica launches campaign to educate the public on proper e-waste disposal

Oct, 05, 2023 Hi-network.com

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) in Jamaica has initiated a comprehensive campaign to educate citizens on the correct disposal of electronic waste (e-waste).

As technology advances, there has been a noticeable surge in e-waste generation, posing environmental and safety risks due to hazardous chemicals like lead and mercury in these devices.

Aretha McFarlane, Director of Operations at NSWMA, emphasized the importance of responsible disposal and encouraged residents to bring their e-waste to designated drop-off locations, including the agency's headquarters in Kingston and regional offices islandwide. NSWMA also offers business collection services and will join the global observance of International E-waste Day on October 14 under the local theme 'Mek Haste and Recycle Yuh E-Waste.'

Why does it matter?

Properly disposing of e-waste is a critical issue with implications for the environment, public health, resource conservation, and societal responsibilities. Addressing this problem by educating citizens and facilitating correct disposal is essential to mitigate its negative consequences.
