ITU agrees on key 5G performance requirements

ITU drafted a report on minimum network requirements of 5G networks. The proposed framing standard is to be approved by the ITU-R Study Group 5 in November 2017 and should serve as a basis for further standardisation of International Mobile Technology 2020 environment (IMT-2020) and its 5G networks. The document expects three main scenarios in the IMT-2020 networks. Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine type communications (mMTC). To meet the 5G criteria the network has to offer 20 Gbit/s (download) a 10 Gbit/s (upload) speeds in laboratory conditions. The real conditions in dense urban areas will provide much lower speeds. A common user experience is expected to be 100 Mbit/s (download) and 50 Mbit/s (upload).
