If ChatGPT isn't working, it's probably not your fault. It might be that the service is down, or the servers are overloaded. Or you might just need to log in again because permissions were reset. That often means the best way to get ChatGPT working again is to simply wait, but there are some other potential fixes you can try too.
If you think ChatGPT might be down, you'll just have to wait for it to come back online again. OpenAI sometimes posts updates on its blog and social media accounts which can give you updates. Alternatively, check the status of ChatGPT yourself by finding out if it's down right now.
If it turns out that ChatGPT is down, and the API isn't working for the app, or the logins servers aren't running properly, you'll need to wait for it to come back online.
If the ChatGPT website is down but the API appears to be working correctly, you may be able to use it through the app instead. ChatGPT has Android and iOS applications that give you all the same features as the ChatGPT web service. Try using them if the website is down or not working properly.
If the apps aren't working on your phone, but the OpenAI status page says it should be working, try using the website instead.
Try rebooting your router. Doing so can get your Wi-Fi or Ethernet working again if it's down-or just working too slowly for ChatGPT to work properly.
Clear your browser cache and cookies. Corrupted data or bad cookies can sometimes cause login issues with ChatGPT.
Try a different browser. Some web browsers work better with ChatGPT than others. Here are our favorites.
Disable your VPN. If you're using a VPN to connect to ChatGPT, try disabling it. ChatGPT may block the servers for your VPN as a security measure. If you're still stuck, try troubleshooting your VPN issues.
Troubleshoot your internet connection. If there's an ongoing problem with your internet, that might be why ChatGPT isn't working for you.
Check the ChatGPT support knowledgebase. The OpenAI website has an extensive list of problems and potential ChatGPT fixes. You might find an answer to your problem there.
If you still can't get ChatGPT working, or you just want to use an AI service while you wait for it to come back online, try one of the alternative AI chatbots that are out there. Plenty exist and many of them are free.
ChatGPT might not be working for a range of reasons. Most often, it's because of ChatGPT itself.
The website or web service might be down, which could prevent you from using it at all. The login system could be broken, or the servers overloaded with too many users at one time. The owner of ChatGPT, OpenAI, may also have updated the service so you need to log in again.
Your system in particular might also be the issue. It could be a problem with the browser you're using, or you might need to clear your cache. You may have an issue with your internet, too.
