Google sends Fitbit warning email by mistake

Google has apologised after mistakenly sending an email to Fitbit users warning of potential account deletion, even to those who had already migrated their accounts.

The company clarified that no action was needed for those who had completed the transition, acknowledging the unnecessary stress caused by the error.

The original message aimed to remind users about the impending deadline for Fitbit account migration to Google, which became mandatory following Google's acquisition of Fitbit in 2021.

Users who fail to complete the transition will have their accounts and data deleted on February 2, 2026, likely in compliance with regulations such as Europe's GDPR.

Fitbit has been gradually integrated into Google's ecosystem, with new users required to create Google accounts since April 2023.

Despite privacy concerns raised during the acquisition, Google has maintained that Fitbit health data will not be used to personalise Google Ads. The transition has been ongoing since 2023, and Fitbit's website now redirects users to the Google Store.
