The Lisbon Council has launched the 2019 Future of Work Index, ranking the preparedness of the labour markets for the future of work in 28 EU countries. The Index addresses the challenges posed by digital technology and other innovations to the world of work and how policies will need to be adapted in order to reflect these changes. The study lists modern workforces, new forms of employment, new tools and transition effectiveness as key aspects to demonstrate a country's readiness for the future of work. It also predicts the rise of independent working as a major trend in the next decades. In terms of rankings, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden are placed at the top of the list regarding the readiness of their workforce for a smooth transition towards the knowledge economy. Alternatively, Greece is at the bottom of the index performing poorly in the four key aspects for a modern workforce.
