EU industry chief urges TikTok to improve compliance with EU regulations

May, 19, 2023 Hi-network.com

Thierry Breton, the EU industry chief, recently had a conversation with TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, where it informed Chew that TikTok still needs to make significant improvements to comply with EU regulations. Breton highlighted the need for better content moderation, preventing excessive content, ensuring data safety (especially for children's data), and overall compliance with the EU rules.

Several countries, including the UK, the US, and some EU member states, have already imposed restrictions on TikTok due to security concerns. Last month, the EU identified 19 major online platforms, including TikTok, that will be subject to the Digital Services Act (DSA) starting in August. These new rules oblige companies to manage risks, conduct external audits, share data with authorities and researchers, and adopt a code of conduct. Breton had previously urged TikTok to align its business practices with the EU's Digital Services Act.
