EU digital identity wallet to be piloted in Luxembourg amongst other states

Nov, 30, 2023 Hi-network.com

Within twenty-six months, Luxembourg's Ministry of digitalisation and its Government IT Centre will join other public and private sector entities in 19 other European states and Ukraine to test the region's digital identity system. Within the Potential Consortium, the framework for the European Digital Identity Wallet pilot programme (EUDIW), official documents will be stored and exchanged across six use cases. For Luxembourg, the use cases include mobile driving licenses, accessing eGovernment services, opening a bank account, and remote document signing.

The Ministry anticipated moving forward with its objective to secure the wallet for its citizens, which it states will be a convenient, secure, and easy-to-use solution.

Why does it matter?

In the first instance, the pilot is a necessary step in the implementation process of public digital IDs, given that several countries across the globe have been encountering issues with their instances. Moreover, the EUDIW will consolidate relations within the bloc, rendering cross-border transactions and relations more convenient.
