The US Department of Homeland Security declared the elections system as critical infrastructure, following alleged Russian hacking during 2016 elections. According to Politico, the DHS head explained that the decision would ensure protection of "polling places, election machines, voter databases and other information technology a formal cybersecurity priority for the department". The decision has, however, faced strong opposition from some state election officials.
