UN urges better protection of journalists, activists in Mexico

Aug, 26, 2023 Hi-network.com

At least 11 reporters and 13 human rights activists have been killed in Mexico so far this year, according to the UN Human Rights group. As death tolls are expected to record levels in 2019, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico said the Mexican government program to protect journalists and activists is underfunded and cannot guarantee safety amid widespread impunity and threats. Jan Jarab, head of the OHCHR in Mexico, said its "political commitment" to protecting journalists and activists had proven to be a challenge on various levels. This raises questions whether media safety is a matter of priority for President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
