More than one year after the publication of its first draft, the personal data protection bill was finally introduced to the Indian parliament. This legislation is the first major law to update the data protection framework in India. The content of the legislation has raised controversies, as it would restrict the capacities of companies to process sensitive data, while offering public authorities more power to access personal data. According to the Financial Times, this legislation is not expected to pass during the current parliamentary session, which ends this week, and will probably be taken up again when parliament reconvenes in February 2020.
