India's facial recognition plan face anger from privacy groups

Privacy groups in India have denounced plans by India to introduce facial recognition across the country, after bids for a system aimed at matching CCTV cameras with the national criminal database. According to the Financial Times, India's National Crime Records Bureau at the home affairs ministry issued a tender deadline of October 11 for bids to create a system for all state police forces that will enable "fast and accurate face recognition" in a "live environment". Also, officers of local police forces would be able to search the images through a mobile app. These bids have sparked alarm among privacy advocates who argue that the government seeks to create a mass-surveillance tool with little oversight, and point to the lack of existing personal data regulation in India.
