High-capacity subsea cable to link New Zealand and Australia

Intelia New Zealand has initiated the Te Waipounamu subsea cable project, that will concet Invercargill in New Zealand to Sydney and Melbourne in Australia. The cable, spanning 3,000km, is named after the Maori term for the South Island.

This initiative is anticipated to revolutionize connectivity in the South Island, opening up significant potential for sustainable data storage in Southland. Remi Galasso, Intelia NZ's founder, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasising its transformative impact on digital development in New Zealand. The cable will consist of 16 fiber pairs, featuring 4 pairs from Invercargill to Australia with a total capacity of 120Tbps, and 12 pairs connecting Sydney and Melbourne with a capacity of 35Tbps per fiber pair.

Why does it matter?

The purpose of this project, is to significantly increase the capacity, quality, and availability of internet connectivity between Australia and New Zealand. This project aims to enhance connectivity and meet the growing demand for data transmission between the two countries, supporting various applications such as on-demand video, social media, and business activities
