Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 262 into law on 6 June in Florida, creating the Digital Bill of Rights. The new law enters into force on 1 July 2024. He emphasised that everyone has the right to be able to protect their data.
The Digital Bill of Rights includes the right to control personal data, the right to know that your data will not be used against you, the right to understand how internet search engines manipulate search results, the right to opt out of the sale of personal data, and the right to protect children from the collection of personal data.
Proposed Senate Bill 262 gives users the right to control their personal data on social media, including the ability to erase it and opt out of data processing for targeted advertising and sales. Users have the option to opt out of data gathering using speech recognition. In addition, the law shields minors from needless data processing. Search engines must divulge their ranking factors to avoid political influence. The legislation forbids government officials from deleting information from social media and prohibits government bodies from maintaining employment connections for content control.
