In light of recent legislation, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) joined 26 other human rights, press freedom, and internet freedom organisations in pressing Turkey's internet regulating body, the Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), to safeguard end-to-end encrypted services.

A 40-article bill with revisions outlining the responsibility of social media corporations and other internet service providers, such as messaging applications, was approved by Turkey's parliament on 13 October 2022. This bill includes making it necessary for platforms with more than a million users to establish local offices and designate local representatives, enabling the authorities to bring legal action against them and facilitating Turkish authorities' access to user data.
