New Zealand assigns 24-30 GHz spectrum for mobile and satellite services

New Zealand's Cabinet has finalised key decisions regarding the 24-30 GHz radio spectrum range to facilitate the upcoming phase of development. The government has designated the 24.25-27.5 GHz spectrum range primarily for mobile usage, with the potential inclusion of satellite services in specific regions subject to technical conditions. This decision follows a consultation process carried out in 2021.

Regarding the 28 GHz band, it will be divided into two sections. The 27.5-28.35 GHz spectrum range will follow a sharing model between mobile and satellite services, while the 28.35-29.5 GHz spectrum range will be predominantly allocated for satellite services. There is an option to consider limited mobile usage under specific technical conditions.

These spectrum allocations will be available for extended use starting around May 2026. Existing satellite operators with licenses will have the opportunity to apply for extensions. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will assess potential new or additional licenses case by case, adhering to existing regulations and stringent criteria to ensure compatibility with the overarching allocation decision and to avoid precluding future determinations.
