The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has adopted recommendations on adequacy referential under the EU's Law Enforcement Directive (LED). Adopted in 2016, the LED lays down specific rules with regard to the processing of personal data by competent authorities for the purposes of the prevention, investigation, detection, or prosecution of criminal offences or the execution of criminal penalties. The new recommendations establish core data protection principles that must be present in a third country or in the legal framework of an international organisation to ensure essential equivalence with the EU framework within the scope of the LED.
