The Thomson Reuters Institute conducted a survey of over 440 lawyers from large and midsize law firms in the USA, UK, and Canada to measure awareness and adoption of ChatGPT and generative AI within the legal industry. It was found that 82% of the participants believe that ChatGPT and generative AI can be applied to legal work, while 51% think that ChatGPT and generative AI should be applied to legal work. It is also found that while awareness of the technology is high, actual usage is still limited. Firms are taking a cautiously proactive approach and many lawyers have concerns about the accuracy, security, and confidentiality of using generative AI tools. Lastly, the report suggests that regardless of the level of use of ChatGPT and generative AI, this technology has the potential to change the legal industry.
