According to the New York Times, a New York district has deployed facial recognition technology to monitor the identity if individuals on the property of its eight schools, 'becoming the first known public school district in New York to adopt facial recognition, and one of the first in the nation'. Officials from the district argue this technology will help to fight crime, prevent mass shootings and stop sexual predators. However, opponents point to the growing evidence of racial bias in facial recognition systems, and expect national lawmakers to take action in light of the current spread of facial recognition across the country.
