Indian Prime Minister approves tabling in Parliament of data protection bill

The cabinet of the Indian Prime Minister approved the tabling in parliament of a new data protection bill. According to Reuters, the Personal Data Protection bill, drafted by a panel headed by a former Supreme Court judge had been submitted last year to the Indian government, will be key in regulating how national and international companies process, store and transfer Indian consumers' data. According to the Times of India, the bill proposes that companies mandatorily store sensitive personal information on servers in India, and introduces heavy fines and jail terms up to three years for violations.
