According to a news report, the Internet in the Indian states of Assam and Meggalaya was shut down on 13 December as a measure to control protests over a 'controversial and far-reaching' new citizen legislation.
A new Citizens Amendment Bill passed by the parliament and approved by the president, which seeks to provide a path to citizenship for non-Muslim minorities from three neighbouring countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh) sparked the protests. The protestors, mainly residents of the northeastern states of Assam and Meggalaya have expressed concerns over immigration from the aforementioned nations. According to the report, texting services have also been suspended.
