According to a press release, the director of Technology, Climate Change and Natural Resources Management at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Mr. Jean-Paul Adam has stated that Africa is in urgent need of Affordable broadband Internet in order to have a share in the world digital economy which accounts for about 15% of global GDP. Addressing journalists in a virtual briefing Mr. Adam said currently Africa contributes less than 1% to the world's digital economy. Reiterating earlier calls made by the world bank, Mr. Adam said Africa would require USD100 billion to achieve quality universal Internet access by 2030. He said further that affordable access to high speed broadband will serve as the bedrock for launching several applications that will help Africans address their issues and engage better in the digital economy.
