An official of the Ghanaian National Identity Authority (NIA) has been arrested for registering people for digital IDs against a presidential directive banning public meetings following the coronavirus Corona pandemic. Ghana was in the midst of a yearlong mass enrollment for its new digital ID when coronavirus Corona struck. There has been controversy on whether the mass registration exercise was among activities suspended. The registration is important for elections slated in December this year, as the GhanaCard, the smart card issued after registration is the main document to be used for identification during the elections.
